Laser Treatments

At The Maryland Institute of Plastic Surgery, we strive to stay abreast of all the advancements in the field of aesthetic medicine so we can continue to provide our patients with a broad range of treatment options. We have also invested in cutting-edge technology that allows our team to offer minimally invasive cosmetic procedures that fit into busy lifestyles.

Laser Treatments We Offer

Laser treatments have become increasingly sought-after in recent years because they are highly versatile and can treat a variety of common concerns. We are pleased to use the revolutionary Cutera Coolglide 1064 nm Yag Laser, which can provide different levels and types of treatment depending on your goals.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

Aging skin brings a variety of issues that might make you feel self-conscious about your appearance. For example, perhaps you spent too much time outside without sunscreen in your younger years, and are now ashamed of sun damage, dark spots, and discoloration on your face, arms, legs, back, or chest.

An innovative technique called intense pulsed light therapy can help remove years of sun damage and improve the look of your skin without the need for surgery. The IPL function provides photorejuvenation treatments, which are ideal for people who have a goal of refining skin texture and evening out skin discoloration caused by sun damage, aging, acne, rosacea, damaged blood vessels, enlarged pores, or fine lines.

Laser Genesis

Laser Genesis is one of our most asked-about treatment options. Genesis uses low levels of laser energy to gently heat layers of tissue in the dermis. The rising temperature breaks up oil and dirt, rebuilds collagen and evens out skin tone. Genesis is a treatment option that resurfaces the face by stimulating the skin with laser pulses.

This laser-induced heat also has the added benefit of improving skin texture and tone via increased production of collagen and elastin – two vital proteins that help the skin maintain its structure. If your skin has lost its youthful qualities and you’re seeking to refresh your appearance with minimal recovery time, try adding Laser Genesis skin resurfacing to your regimen. You will notice an improvement in the quality of your skin almost immediately.

Vascular Laser

As we age, our veins tend to become more prominent. Unwanted spider veins and facial veins can be embarrassing and make you feel self-conscious, and they are not always easy to cover up with makeup. Through laser treatment, we can lessen the appearance of these veins. Vein therapy can address noticeable veins on your face or legs as an alternative to surgical treatment.

During your vein treatment, a specially designed handpiece will deliver pulses of light energy to the targeted vein. Your blood vessels will absorb this energy, while the surrounding skin remains untouched. The heat from the laser causes the blood to coagulate and destroys the blood vessel.

Lasers also allow us to treat angiomas, scars, and stretch marks with excellent results and minimal downtime. Unlike invasive surgical procedures that only make superficial changes to your skin, laser treatment goes a step further to stimulate the skin’s natural ability to regenerate collagen and elastin. You will notice an ongoing improvement in the texture and quality of your skin after just one session.

Hair Removal Laser

Since time immemorial, people have tweezed, shaved, scraped, and waxed away unwanted hair in pursuit of smoother skin. While these methods may be effective in the short term, they can irritate sensitive skin, and they also allow the hair to grow back. Today, we have access to a more technologically advanced method of hair removal that promises a long-term solution to unwelcome body hair.

Laser hair removal has become one of the most popular non-invasive cosmetic procedures in the nation. It works by directing targeted pulses of light into hair follicles. The pigment in the follicles absorbs this light, which damages the follicles and slows future hair growth – all while leaving the surrounding skin untouched.

Since this procedure targets the melanin in hair follicles, it is most effective for people with lighter skin and darker hair, although advanced technology has now made laser hair removal an option for individuals with darker skin tones. Though you can get laser hair removal anywhere on your body, the most common areas where people request treatment include their legs, underarms, upper lip, chin, back, ears, and bikini line.

Am I a Good Candidate for Laser Skin Treatments?

If you are dealing with unwelcome sun damage, wrinkles, scars, stretch marks, body hair, and prominent veins, you may be an excellent candidate for laser skin resurfacing. If your skin is prone to scarring easily, or if you currently have acne, laser skin treatment may not be a good option for you.

Pregnant women should not undergo laser skin treatment. People with darker skin tones might also want to consider a different solution to these challenges, as the laser treatment can trigger changes in skin pigmentation. You can schedule an in-person consultation and evaluation before undergoing laser skin care to make sure it’s the right treatment option for you.

What Results Can I Expect?

Laser treatments are amazingly effective, but your specific results will depend on the concerns you are addressing. However, most patients will notice improved skin tone and texture within two to three weeks of their first treatment, and additional sessions will create even better outcomes as your skin continues its natural process of healing and repair.

Our team will evaluate you in person to develop a customized treatment plan and schedule for you based on your skin condition and cosmetic goals. In general, many of our patients see their best results after receiving three to five sessions, spaced three to four weeks apart. You may also contact us to schedule periodic maintenance appointments if you wish.

After receiving laser treatments, your skin will be particularly sensitive and vulnerable to UV rays, so please be sure to protect yourself from future sun damage by wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and avoiding excessive sun exposure as much as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions: Laser Treatments in Baltimore, MD

How Many Laser Hair Removal Treatments Will I Need?

Laser hair removal can only target hair in the active growing phase. Since hair cycles through growth and dormancy phases at different rates, you’ll have hair in every cycle of growth on your body at the same time. We perform multiple laser hair removal treatments to target each hair at the correct time. The total number of treatments needed will depend on several factors, but most patients will require three to seven treatments.

Which Laser Treatment in Baltimore Should I Choose?

We offer many different laser treatments to our patients in Baltimore and Columbia. These treatments can address everything from skin discoloration to wrinkles or unwanted hair. Come in for a consultation, and we’ll help you choose an effective laser treatment for your skin concerns. Our practice has top-of-the-line laser systems available and experienced providers to ensure stunning results from each treatment.

Is Laser Treatment Safe for My Skin Tone?

Laser treatments are safe for many skin types and colors, but some patients with darker skin tones or heavily tanned skin may not be good candidates. During your consultation, we’ll help you choose an effective treatment. If laser isn’t your best option, we have many other rejuvenating options available, including injectable fillers and facelift surgery.

How Can I Prepare for My Laser Treatments?

Laser skin rejuvenation requires very little prep. We’ll explain the process to you when you come in for your consultation. Some laser treatments work best on untanned skin. Practicing good sun hygiene (covering up and using sunscreen) can help you prepare your skin for treatment.

Is Laser Rejuvenation Painful?

Depending on the laser treatment selected, you may feel sensations during treatment that include tingling, snapping, or heat. We use topical anesthetics during some laser treatments to numb the skin and make you as comfortable as possible during your procedure. If discomfort is a possible side effect of your treatment, ask us about options to minimize any pain you might feel without detracting from your results.

What Skin Conditions Can Lasers Treat?

At The Maryland Institute of Plastic Surgery, we use cosmetic lasers to treat a wide range of skin concerns, including sun damage, wrinkles, unwanted hair, vascular conditions, spider veins, stretch marks, and uneven skin tone. Please schedule an appointment at one of our two offices to learn more about the many laser skin rejuvenation treatments available.

How Do Cosmetic Lasers Enhance the Skin?

Cosmetic lasers are an effective option for improving the appearance of your skin. Lasers heat the skin, targeting skin problems and encouraging collagen growth. More collagen means fewer wrinkles, improved skin texture, and a more youthful complexion. Lasers can target many skin concerns and provide long-lasting results.
